NEATH 2 - 0 BANGOR CITY
21 AUGUST 2011
MATCH REPORT FROM MIKE SMITH (
the-citizens-choice.co.uk)

After a goalless and evenly contested first half Neath ran out 2-0 winnners with both goals coming in the closing twenty minutes. And in a fairly fought contest Swansea whistler Mark Whitby managed to dish out seven yellow cards, including two to Bangor players.

The first half saw City force the cleaner openings but fail to capitalise. Chris Roberts lined up a long range freekick but was denied by former Prestatyn defender Kai Edwards who turned his back and luckily deflected the ball out for a corner. The energetic Roberts then picked out Alan Bull but he fired over.

Peter Hoy was a source of concern for Neath as he dispatched some threatening long throws but Kai Edwards coped well and too often the referee's whistle ended the danger.

Five minutes before the interval Lee Trundle joined team mate Adie Harris in the referee's notebook for a display of dissent. City had a freekick on the edge of the Eagles box but Dave Morley's effort was saved by Kendall who promptly punted the bal upfield only to catch Lee Trundle offside.

As time ran out Lee Idzi did well to deny Kerry Morgan and referre Whitby got into the action again with a yellow card brandished at Luke Bowen for charging down a shot which then struck his arm.

That was about it for a slighlty disappointing first period, goalless, all even and much for both management teams to chew over with their charges.

HALF TIME  0-0

Within minutes of the restart Alan Bull rushed into the Neath box but with the ball seemingly set for the back of the net, a Edwards booted clear.

Moments later Lee Trundle shot across goal, Lee Idzi parried but Luke Bowen fired into the side netting when well placed. Alan Bull responded for Bangor but his shot was more or less straight at Kendall who saved confidently.

On 56 minutes a first yellow card for City as Les Davies is adjudged to have fouled Kai Edwards.   Ian Hillier is next to find his name being taken before, on the hour, Craig Hughes replaced the burly Bowen.

Lee Trundle went close for Neath before City got the ball in the home net but Sion Edwards was ruled to have fouled Kendall. Lee Idzi saved well from substitute Hughes.

Craig Garside came on for Chris Jones but within seconds City were behind.

Lee Trundle who had been a menace all afternoon shot, Lee Idzi parried but Kerry Morgan slid home the loose ball. With fifteen minutes remaining Kyle Wilson came on for the hard working Les Davies but on 78 minutes it was two nil. Lee Trundle again to the fore with a pass to substitute Craig Hughes who drove home past Idzi.

The former Rhyl striker was now attacking with the wind in his sails and it took all Michael Johnston's efforts to keep him at bay in the closing minutes.  City threw Eddie Jebb on for Dave Morley but it was Neath's afternoon and, remarkably, they sit atop of the Welsh Premier table as the only side to have won both opening fixtures.
