Three points and a clean sheet on the opening day.

Just what the doctor ordered. And as ever a warm welcome before and after the game from the Newtown supporters whose friendship and hospitality sets a standard few can match.

Manager Nev Powell gave first starts to four summer signings, defenders Dec Walker and Anthony Miley, midfielder Rob Jones and 18 year old striker Jamie McDaid.

Attacking the Social Club End with fourty or so blues followers gathered in the little stand behind the goal, City started strongly with the breeze and hill in their favour. Midfielders Ryan Edwards and Damien Allen quickly into the action with Les Davies also unsettling the normally reliable Jones & Sutton combination. Six corners came and went in the opening twelve minutes with Anthony Miley heading over from the fourth, Les Davies from the fifth and Sion Edwards striking Mills Evans with a shot from sixth that left the lanky rightback crumpled in the box.

Debutant striker Jamie McDaid set up Damien Allen but his effort was blocked by Sutton. Then Rob Jones chipped the ball over Andy Jones for McDaid but his run ended in a shot which landed on the net. Next Dec Walker header over from eight yards but on twenty minutes Newtown won their first corner which Bangor duly cleared.

All action midfielder Ryan Edwards latched onto McDaid's lay off and shot on target but Mike Platt saved well. On 25 minutes a rash challenge from rightback Mills Evans saw him yellow carded and Sion Edwards needing off field treatment. A seventh corner came along on the half hour but Newtown defender strongly. Moments later Jamie McDaid cut in from the left but his low drive was held at the near post by the busy Platt.

Another debutant Dec Walker then smashed a thunderous effort which Platt did well to deflect but as Les Davies rushed in he was denied by the linesman's flag. With ten minutes to the interval Luke Boundford crafted Newtown's first clean effort which Sion Edwards blocked and the ball ballooned high up and out to the leftback position.

Eight minutes from the break Zach Evans was yellow carded for a needless altercation in front of the Bangor dug out. Bangor went close again as Sion Edwards fired narrowly wide.

And that was the final action of a first half City had dominated and yet to the general concern of the seventy or so supporters who had made their various journeys, failed to capitalise on.

HALF TIME 0-0 - No changes at the interval.

Bangor won an eighth corner almost immediately but Newtown cleared. Controvesy of sorts then as Mills Evans who had been yellow carded for a foul on Sion Edwards repeated the offence but was not punished by referee Hames. A freekick into the box prompted Andy Jones to push Les Davies a throw himself down to cover the sin. It worked as neither referee nor linesman spotted what was clearly a penalty offence. Newtown broke down their right but Dec Walker covered well.

Ten minutes after the interval Nathan Hodge made way for former Llanelli striker Jeff White. On the hour Dec Walker sent a low freekick fizzing across goal the goal from the left which thumped into the billboards. Moments later left winger Sean Evans replaced Matt Hearsay.
Jamie McDaid then had two shots blocked in quick succession as Bangor pressed and the young striker continued to impress. City won a ninth corner which Anthony Miley nearly squeezed home but Mills Evans headed off the line all this after Ryan Edwards saw his shot from the right blocked.

On 67 minutes a second Newtown corner but moments later an inviting cross from Sion Edwards was headed by Les Davies but Platt again saved well. A tenth corner for Bangor and shouts for handball after Anthony Miley's shot but no response from the official. Then Chris Jones came on for Rob Jones.

Sean Evans has a bag of tricks and his first effort was a low twenty five yarder which sped perilously close the post. But Bangor were in no mood to ponder that and won an eleventh corner from which Mike Platt produced a truly amazing low save at the foot of the post from Les Davies' downwards header.

A twelth corner and Les Davies had the ball in the net but was denied by the referee awarding a defensive freekick. With thirteen minutes left Jamie Petrie replaced Jamie McDaid who had impressed on debut. Goalkeeper Platt then clearly handled outside his box but neither official agreed with every Bangor fan present!

With time running out Newtown rallied to force a couple more corners of their own and nerves jangled amongst Bangor fans. There was a yellow card for Damien Allen for what seemed to be dissent before with nine minutes left Luke Gibson came on for Sion Edwards and took up a centreback berth.

A fifth Newtown corner was cleared and with three minutes left Les Davies crashed home a well deserved winner with Platt for once beaten. Jubilation amongst the Bangor fans but a sixth and final Newtown corner came along which Lee Idzi took confidently and by and large that was that.

A hard fought but merited win for Bangor, a clean sheet and some impressive performances from players old and new. Well done.
