EURO FOOTBALL SET TO RETURN TO BANGOR

European football could return to Bangor for the first time in nearly 14 years.

As a result of an application from the Football Association of Wales, under its strategic plan, UEFA has introduced a one-year exception that qualifying rounds of their competitions can be played in grounds with seating for 1000, rather than the previous requirement of 1500 seats.

Bangor City’s new ground at Nantporth already has 1100 seats and the Club is aiming to expand on that.

‘This is great news for Bangor City’, said Club Chairman Dilwyn Jones. ‘From our current position at the top of the Welsh Premier League, we feel we have a very good chance of qualifying for Europe again come the end of the season.'

'If we do qualify, to be able to play at least some of our matches in Bangor will mean a better financial return for the club, a real home-ground atmosphere for the players, and of course a more convenient experience for the fans.'

We already have over 1000 seats at Nantporth, and are still aiming to increase the seating capacity to 1500 as soon as possible so that more representative matches can be played at the stadium and to improve the profile of football in this region.’

City last played a European match in Bangor in August 1998, when they lost 0 " 2 to Haka of Finland in the Cup-Winners’ Cup.

Since then, The Citizens have played home legs of European competitions at Wrexham and Rhyl
